Baylor Baseball’s Enzo Apodaca Named Big 12 Player of the Week
IRVING, Texas – Baylor baseball redshirt junior outfielder Enzo Apodaca has been named the Big 12 Player of the Week, as announced Monday afternoon by the conference office.
Apodaca was terrific in BU’s road sweep at BYU, leading the team and the league with a .600 batting average for the week and reaching base in 12 of his 18 plate appearances against the Cougars. He totaled nine hits, including a five-hit performance in Saturday’s series finale, and racked up five RBIs with runs driven in in each of the three games.
A product of Scottsdale, Ariz., Apodaca went 3-for-6 in Thursday night’s series opener, picked up an RBI infield single on Friday, then collected Baylor’s first five-hit game in two seasons in Saturday’s finale, singling four times, walking once, stealing a base and crushing his career-high fourth home run of the season.
The Bears’ leadoff batter has paced the offense over the last nine games, slashing .447/.563/.632 since his return to the top spot in the batting order on March 29, which began a stretch of eight wins in nine contests for Baylor. Apodaca is riding a team-best 13-game hitting streak, owns 12 multi-hit performances and leads the club with seven multi-RBI games in 2024.
The series sweep marked BU’s first over a Big 12 opponent, and first on the road, since April 26-28, 2019, when the Bears took all three from TCU in Fort Worth.
This is Baylor’s third weekly award of the 2024 season and fourth under second-year head coach Mitch Thompson. Apodaca’s honor marks just the third time since the 2015 season that BU has had a Player, Pitcher and Newcomer of the Week honoree in the same season.
