Kelly Shoppach catches a no hitter from Matt Garza

just finished against the Detroit Tigers

3rd inning walk kept it from being a perfect game.

The next batter hit into a DP, so Garza faced the minimum.

I'll defer to El Oso on this one...i think his thread was first.

Some other things from the game

**It was a dual no hitter until the sixth inning

**The first hit of the game--get this--a grand slam

**Garza got a lot of help from the guy behind the plate in the ninth--bit worst case those were walks--not hits.

Great title. Shows you have your priorities straight.

Garza had kind of a awkward reference to Shoppach in the on field post game interview. Referred to him as "that guy calling the pitches" or something weird like that. Or maybe it was a reference to the umpire giving him favorable calls, which is strange and diminishes from his accomplishment.

Kinda strange - seemed he was referring to Shoppach and didn't know his name.

Apparently is was a second inning walk. I was grading papers, so I mustve remembered wrong.

Shoppach is probably my all time favorite Baylor Bear. I made sure to point out to my son when we watched him play at Baylor, that no matter how well he hit the ball, how poor he hit the ball, or even drawing a walk--he ran the bases like he was on fire and the base was a lake.

Buck Showalter gave some major props to Shoppach on Baseball Tonight. Said 101 of the 120 pitches Garza threw were fastballs. Thought that the dugout kept calling for him to mix in other pitches, but Shoppach stayed with what was working. And it worked.

I heard about the no-no on the radio, but didn't know Shoppach was catching. Kelly won't ever forget this night and I'm happy for him. First no-hitter ever for a Tampa Bay guy.
“I had a real good time tonight blocking shots,” said Griner, who set both Baylor and Big 12 records for single-game blocks. “They didn’t get the message to stop coming in, because they kept coming. So I just kept taking the blocks.”

    Cool

    BaylorFans.com Congrats to Kelly Shoppach!

What a thrill that must have been for Kelly Shoppach being a battery mate for a no-hitter!

A great lesson and great example for your son.
