NU QB leaves team

http://www.huskerextra.com/articles/...0437515498.txt

Figured a leading candidate to be Nebraska’s next starting quarterback, Patrick Witt is leaving the program.

“We have no comment and Patrick has no comment. He’s leaving,” Gene Witt said Sunday night.

Gene Witt said his son, a sophomore-to-be from Wylie, Texas, would leave Lincoln in May after finishing out this semester of classes.

“Everything was official (Saturday). It’s a done deal,” Gene said. “He’ll be leaving at the end of this semester. He’s got a 4.0 GPA and he’s focusing on his grades now.”

Husker head coach Bo Pelini issued a statement on Sunday night, wishing Witt well.

“Patrick has decided that it is in his best interest to continue his college career at another school,” Pelini said. “Patrick is a great kid from a great family and I appreciate the contributions he has made to our football program. I wish him nothing but the best in the future and know he will be a success wherever he goes.”

Witt’s departure seems to place junior Zac Lee as the top quarterback candidate going into spring ball next month, given his experience in the system. However, redshirt freshman Kody Spano and true freshman Cody Green will have something to say about that in the race to replace Joe Ganz as starter.

Green enrolled at Nebraska in January and is already participating with the team in winter conditioning. Taylor Martinez, a Corona, Calif., product who was part of the 2009 recruiting class, also wants to play quarterback at NU, though he would be a longshot for the starting job this year since he won’t be here in the spring.

The 6-foot-4, 220-pound Witt appeared in five games this past season and completed 6 of 8 passes for 48 yards while rushing four times for 20 yards and a touchdown.

Throughout the fall, Pelini said Witt and Lee were back and forth in their battle for the No. 2 spot.

Witt did seem to have a slight edge at season’s end and was called upon in the Gator Bowl to replace an injured Ganz for one play in the fourth quarter.

The play was a key one in the game. Witt scrambled for four yards to the NU 31, but the ball came out and a Clemson player picked it up and raced for what he thought was a game-turning touchdown. But officials reviewed the play and found that Witt was down before the ball came out.

Leading to that game, Witt seemed excited for his chance to be the man at Nebraska in 2009.

“I’ve been here for a while now. I’m pretty familiar with the ins and outs,” Witt told the Journal Star in December. “I’m ready to get out there and start taking command.”

Part of the 2007 recruiting class, Witt threw for 1,846 yards and 17 touchdowns his senior year at Wylie. He arrived there after playing his junior season at Parkview High School in Lilburn, Ga.

As for Witt’s next step, “He’s got a bright future and we’ll evaluate that as we go,” his father said. “We appreciate the opportunity at Nebraska, and we just have no comment about what took place.”

Who’s left at QB?

With Patrick Witt departing, the race for this year’s starting quarterback at Nebraska seems to have three lead candidates:

Zac Lee: Entering his third year in the NU system, Lee is mobile and possesses a strong arm, capable of throwing a ball 70 yards. At 6-foot-2 and 210 pounds, he threw for more than 3,400 yards in 2006 for San Francisco Community College but has thrown just two passes as a Husker.

Kody Spano: A dual-threat quarterback who redshirted last season. Threw for more than 5,000 yards and rushed for about 900 his last two years at Stephenville High School in Texas.

Cody Green: Passed for more than 3,200 yards and ran for more than 1,600 last year during his senior year at Dayton High in Texas. He’s loaded with potential and already on campus, but obviously has some catching up to do with Lee and Spano in knowing the offense.

if Green wins out then they either have some of the greatest coaches at Nebraska or the talent pool is not that high....Green has a TON of talent however from watching him play all through the playoffs i can say the kid is not consistant enough to start at a D1A program as a true freshman....he will be a big time QB one day for Nebraska but unless if his inconsistancy is easily fixed by one spring (i highly doubt it) then i dont think it will be this coming fall...

I think Lee will end up starting. The messed up part of this thing is that there have been rumors that Witt was teaching Cody Green the wrong QB signals during spring practice to screw him out of making the depth chart. My best friend is a WR up there, so I'll check with him and see if they're true, but it's interesting nonetheless. He was 2nd on the depth chart last year so there must be something to this.

Talked to my source. The rumor about him teaching Cody Green the wrong signals is BS. He says they haven't talked about why, but they use VERY FEW hand signals in their offense so that's not the case. There's no way he could've gotten that confused.

Bo Pelini and Bobby Knight would really have to compete for the number 1 a$$hole spot for college coaches.

I have stated this for 5 years, Pelini is a great assistant but he could irritate the devil with his antics. Poor guys in Lincoln, it just breaks my heart.

I doubt this has anything to do with the goofball personality of Pelini. It is getting pretty common for a backup QB in Div-I to tranfer somewhere else because they don't see how to crack the starting lineup. See Jevan Sneed, GJK, and Baylor's Tyler Beatty.

Heard that Witt had a big attitude problem coming out of HS.

I don't know what to expect with Neb. next year. Losing QB, RB, and both WR surely means they will struggle. However most publications have them winning the North and they have a high preseason ranking. They really buy into what Pelini is doing.

I think they suck next year. I think we kill them in Waco.

That's a shock that publications love Nebraska.

Next thing you will tell me is that Notre Dame is back too.

Nebraska has an easier draw in the south than KU. Even so, I think they will have their struggles, unless their defense can carry the team for a good portion of the season. The defense loses a good chuck of folks too-- especially on the D-Line.

Thing that jumps out at me...3 of their 4 quarterbacks listed from the state of Texas. That's a disgrace.

they recruited pretty well in Texas this year.

Texas has been producing too many quality QBs to keep all of them in state. I don't consider losing Witt to Neb. much of a loss considering his attitude problem.

Maybe you don't, but until RG3 (and to some extent Nick Florence) came along, we hadn't exactly been cleaning up on quality QBs. Any of those 3 would probably have been an upgrade.

The players really respect him. None of them believed under Callahan how they do now under Pelini. I think they're very happy with the direction of the program.

Except that Bobby Knight's former players all love him (save for one) and he is the winningest coach in NCAA men's basketball of all time and he still maintains the highest graduation rate of any coach in any sport.

I'll take that kind of a-holedness any day of the week.

As for the Children of the Corn, I'm glad to see the worm turn on them. They kind of lost me when they ran up the score against Army back when I was a student at BU. (Playing Johnny Rodgers in the fourth quarter was pretty low on the "classy" scale, IMHO.)

And if anyone asks, I'm still mad about that horrible call by Fred Swearingen against Benny Barnes in the Super Bowl.

I don't consider him much of a loss b/c he didn't pan out for Neb. I suppose it could turn out for the better like Jevan Sneed did for Ole Miss, but I have a feeling we'll see him next at the likes of Louisiana Tech or Tulsa....

Witt moved to Texas from Georgia as a senior to be in high school. His parents had purchased or were purchasing a home in Dallas Highland Park and called for a meeting with Head Football Coach Randy Allen.

Coach Allen kindly received them and of course, was delighted to meet this strapping Matthew Stafford look-alike who would be moving into the district. The parents told Coach Allen of Patrick's successes and exploits in Georgia high school football as a QB and how excited they all were to be joining a storied program like HP's and how great it was going to be with him leading the Scots to another State 4A championship.

Coach Allen cleared his throat and calmly explained that they were going to be disappointed in what he was going to tell them. He said their plans would not be possible. "You see," he started, "I've had kids in this system all their lives, since 4th grade, and for me to give a starting position to a new kid who is just moving in to the district would not be fair to the kids that have patiently waited for their shot and who have been in the system for years. We promote from within in this system and in this school. It's worked that way for 80 years. Patrick can play a back-up roll as QB, but no matter how good he might be, he will not have a chance to start."

The parents, shaken, thanked Coach and left. They ended their plans to move to HP and instead purchased a home in Wylie.

I predict Witt ends up in Georgia and I predict Stephenville's Kody Spano has already shown he can lead the team.
