BF WG Places 16th at NCAA Central Regional

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Battling windy conditions for a second consecutive day, the Baylor women's golf team finished 16th Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional to conclude the 2009-10 season.

No. 5 USC held off No. 2 Arizona State to take home top team honors, finishing the three-day tournament at 43-over 907. In addition to USC and Arizona State, Purdue, New Mexico, Oklahoma State, Florida State, Oregon and Kent State will each advance to the 29th annual NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, which will be held May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C. Georgia's Marta Silva Zamora and Denver' Kimberly Kim both qualified as individuals for the NCAA Championship.

"Somehow, this golf course was too big for us to conquer this week," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "We shot ourselves out of contention Friday because of the conditions and we just couldn't recover."

Senior Hannah Burke concluded her stellar collegiate career with a 31st-place showing at the NCAA Central Regional. Burke, who carded the third-most pars of the tournament (35), shot a final-round 79 to finish at 19-over (74-82-79=235). Lene Hafsten-Morch bounced back from her second-round 85 Friday, posting Baylor's best score of the final round. Hafsten-Morch's 78 propelled her to finish tied for 56th; the junior also recorded five birdies during the tournament.

"I saw some good things today, but I'm still terribly disappointed all around," Ferdon said. "We had trouble with some shots around the green today and that's something we need to work on heading into next season."

Rounding out play for the Lady Bears were their three remaining underclassmen - sophomore Chelsey Cothran, sophomore Jaclyn Jansen and freshman Melanie White. Cothran (83-76-73=242) and Jansen (82-86-83=251) both tallied a final-round 83, while White finished 119th overall (93-89-93=275).

BF Women's Golf Falls to 16th at Regional
Saturday May 8, 2010 8:53 AM
Posted by staff
COLUMBUS, Ind. - After shooting a second-round 329, the Baylor women's golf team fell to 16th place Friday through 36 holes of the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course.

The entire 24-team field was plagued by 20-30 mile-per-hour winds on the course for the majority of the day. As a result, no team carded a score lower than 304 (16-over par) and Friday's average second-round score was 81.9. USC has taken a four-stroke lead with a 27-over score, while Arizona State is in second at 31-over 607, followed by Oklahoma State (37-over), Oregon (45-over) and Purdue (47-over).

Oklahoma State's Victoria Park and USC's Lizette Salas are tied for the individual lead through 36 holes at 2-over 146. Salas was the only player to shoot under par Friday, carding a 1-under 71.

"We had a chance to make a push up the leaderboard, but we didn't get it done today," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "Playing in windy conditions, we struggled to consistently put the ball in play."

Senior Hannah Burke entered Friday tied for 11th place, but dropped to a 30th-place tie at 12-over 156 after carding a second-round 82. Sophomore Chelsey Cothran recorded the best score of the day for the Lady Bears with a 4-over 76; the Springdale, Ark., native is tied for 50th at 15-over 159. Lene Hafsten-Morch, Jaclyn Jansen and Melanie White each recorded second-round scores of 85, 86 and 89, respectively.

"I thought Chelsey (Cothran) played well today, but I was a little disappointed for Hannah (Burke)," Ferdon said. "She had a chance to move up and battle for one of those top individual spots, but she fell behind early and couldn't make up any ground."

The final round of the 2010 NCAA Central Regional is scheduled to begin with the first wave of golfers at 7 a.m. CDT Saturday and continue in 11-minute increments. Baylor will begin teeing off from the No. 10 tee at 12:30 p.m. EDT. Live scoring will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.

BF WG in 14th at NCAA Central Regional

COLUMBUS, Ind. - Baylor women's golf senior Hannah Burke carded a 74 and is tied for 11th place Thursday after 18 holes of the NCAA Central Regional at Otter Creek Golf Course.

The Lady Bears, which are making their 10th NCAA postseason appearance in 11 seasons, are 14th overall at 28-over 316. No. 2 Arizona State holds a two-shot lead with a score of 9-over 297. No. 5 USC (11-over 299), No. 8 Purdue (15-over 303), No. 31 Oregon (17-over 305) and No. 26 Oklahoma State (17-over 305) round out the top five. Oregon's Kendra Little and Purdue's Thea Hoffmeister share the individual lead after both shot 2-under 70 in the first round. Juliana Murcia of Arizona State was the only other player to post a sub-par round with a 1-under 71.

"This course is as hard (a course) as I've seen," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "The pins were in some tough places and we need to figure out a strategy for tomorrow."

As a team, Baylor recorded five birdies during the first round. Burke, who pared the first 10 holes Thursday, finished the day as the tournament leader with 16 first-round pars.

"We didn't recover from shots in the rough," Ferdon said. "We will try something different tomorrow to get their tee shots in the fairway. Our No. 2 and No.3 players had high scores again. A few shots here and there, we have a chance to be near one of those top-eight spots.

Lene Hafsten-Morch tied for 27th after a 5-over 77, including two birdies. Sophomore Jaclyn Jansen also carded two birdies to finish the first round tied for 79th at 10-over 82. Chelsey Cothran shot 11-over 83 and is tied for 86th, while freshman Melanie White is 120th at 21-over 93.

"I think we are trying too hard to force a low score," Ferdon said. "We need to make the right decisions because this is such a difficult course. I thought it this course would play to our advantage. If we can get our tee shots in play Friday, everything else will be ok."

Round two of the 2010 NCAA Central Regional is scheduled to begin with the first wave of golfers - including all five Lady Bears - at 7 a.m. CDT Friday and continue in 11-minute increments. Live scoring will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.

BF WG Heads to Indiana for NCAA Regional
Wednesday May 5, 2010 6:48 AM
Posted by staff
COLUMBUS, Ind. - The Baylor women's golf team, making its 10th postseason appearance in 11 seasons, seeks the program's second NCAA Championship berth at the NCAA Central Regional, hosted by Indiana University.

The 54-hole regional tournament will be conducted Thurs., May 6-Sat., May 8 at the par-72, 6,416-yard Otter Creek Golf Course. The low eight teams and the low two individuals will advance to the 29th annual NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship, which will be held May 18-21 in Wilmington, N.C.

No. 17 seed Baylor, one of 24 teams tabbed for the NCAA Central Regional, is making its second appearance in Indiana for postseason play. In 2001, the Lady Bears finished 12th in the NCAA Central Regional held at Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind. Baylor is paired with nine teams ranked in the top 30 of the latest Golfstat standings - No. 2 Arizona State, No. 5 USC, No. 8 Purdue, No. 10 Michigan State, No. 16 Denver, No. 20 New Mexico, No. 23 Florida State, No. 26 Oklahoma State and No. 28 Louisville.

All 10 of Baylor's NCAA Regional appearances have come under the guidance of 16th-year head coach Sylvia Ferdon. Baylor posted its best regional finish in 2004 when the Lady Bears placed fifth at the NCAA Central Regional in Normal, Ill., advancing to the NCAA Championships. Prior to its 10th regional selection, Baylor finished ninth at the 2010 Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla., while senior Hannah Burke earned Big 12 All-Tournament Team honors with a second-place showing.

"I'm very happy that we were selected for the NCAA Central Regional," Ferdon said. "We've been recruiting student-athletes that can hit for distance for this moment."

"With a 6,400-yard course at Otter Creek, this will probably be the longest course we've played this season," Ferdon said. "I'm confident in our team's talent and the highly competitive field will be good for us.

The Lady Bears, which rank 25th nationally in scoring average, will be led by Burke, junior Lene Hafsten-Morch and underclassmen Jaclyn Jansen (sophomore), Chelsey Cothran (sophomore) and Melanie White (freshman). Burke holds a 74.33 stroke average in six NCAA Regional rounds. At the 2009 NCAA West Regional last season, she tied for 18th with a 1-over 217, including a first-round 70 - the lowest 18-hole NCAA Regional score in program history.

Burke, who owns the school record with 13 top-five and 21 top-10 career finishes, leads the Lady Bears with a 73.45 stroke average through 31 rounds. The Hertfordshire, England, native ranks seventh nationally 88 birdies, 36th in scoring average and 37th in score vs. par.

"Hannah (Burke) is playing really well," Ferdon said. "She's going to play in any conditions. Her play has peaked this spring and my hope is that she will have a great tournament."

Live scoring for each round of the 2010 NCAA Central Regional will be available at www.BaylorBears.com.

BF Burke Named All-Big 12
Thursday April 29, 2010 6:51 AM
Posted by staff
IRVING, Texas - Baylor women's golf senior Hannah Burke was named to the 2010 All-Big 12 Team, the conference announced Wednesday. Burke, who earned All-Big 12 recognition in 2007 and 2009 and was named 2007 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, is the first three-time All-Big 12 performer in program history.

The 2010 All-Big 12 Team, which consists of 10 student-athletes, was identified by using the top-10 highest-ranked student-athletes according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Big 12 Championship. The Player and Newcomer of the Year are automatically selected as the highest-ranked individuals from the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings following the Conference championship.

"It always exciting to see a player such as Hannah (Burke) receive such a well-deserved honor," Baylor head women's golf coach Sylvia Ferdon said. "She's been the best leader for our program that I've ever coached at Baylor."

The Herfordshire, England, native ranks third in the Big 12 and 36th nationally with a team-best 73.45 scoring average through 31 rounds. Burke also leads the Lady Bears in score vs. par (1.65), rounds of par or better (12), top-10 (six), top-15 (eight) and top-25 (eight) finishes. At last week's Big 12 Championship in Norman, Okla., Burke notched her school-record 13th career top-five finish, placing second overall. She broke the school mark of 12 previously held by Melanie Hagewood (1999-2003).

"Her playing ability continued to get better and better with each season," Ferdon said. "She's broken nearly every record we've had at Baylor. She has a tremendous amount of heart, desire and determination and I'm really proud of her."

Burke and Hagewood share the school record with 21 career top-10 finishes. For her second-place finish at the Big 12 Championship, Burke was named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team, becoming the first three-time all-tournament performer in program history.

The Lady Bears, which earned their 10th invitation to NCAA postseason play in the last 11 years, will participate in the NCAA Central Regional May 6-8 at the Otter Creek Golf Course in Columbus, Ind.
